It seems NASCAR Busch Series driver Chris Wimmer has always felt the need for speed, and speed definitely runs in the Wimmer family. Both racing and winning pulse through his veins and continue to be his lifelong ambitions.
When this Wisconsin native was only 5 years-old, he and older brother Scott raced three-wheelers, competing all over Wisconsin and Iowa. When Scott graduated from three wheels to racing with four wheels, 11 year-old Chris helped out his big brother with whatever Scott would let him touch in the garage. However, by the time he was 14, Chris was working side-by-side with Scott to build the race cars.
Continuing to fuel his racing fever and to satisfy his craving for competition, Wimmer joined his high school’s Ski Team, competing in down-hill events during those brisk Wisconsin winters for the Central U.S. Ski Association. Chris enjoyed success on the slopes, finishing second in the state competition and competing in the Eastern National Championships.
With the rush of acceleration now boiling in his blood, Wimmer would decide he was ready to follow the example of Scott and climb behind the wheel of a car. In 1996, Wimmer began competing in Pure Stocks and Super Late Models on the local Wisconsin tracks. With wheel in hand, Chris Wimmer would not look back. Chris followed-up his success on skis with accolades at the race tracks. Wimmer was the 1996 Pure Stock Champion at State Park Speedway in Wausau, Wis., the 1998 Rookie of the Year at State Park Speedway, the 1998 winner of the CWRA Race of Champions at Golden Sands Speedway, and winner of several major races, including the 1997 and 2000 Detjens Memorial, an annual event at the State Park Speedway in memory of his late uncle and famed Wisconsin racer, Larry Detjens. He also has logged numerous laps at both the I-41 Speedway and the Wisconsin Dells Speedway.

In 2001, Chris entered the ASA Late Model Series, when the family-owned seat was vacated by Scott, who moved on to compete in the NASCAR Busch Series. In 2001 and 2002, Wimmer finished 15th and 17th in the ASA National Standings, respectively. 2003 brought Wimmer his first career pole at Elko Speedway, Minn. and the 12th position in the ASA National Standings. Wimmer’s total career stats include 17 wins, 56 top-5’s, and 113 top-10’s.
Wimmer made the jump in 2004 to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, running a limited schedule with MB Motorsports. He would continue a part-time truck schedule in 2005, competing in 6 total races before moving to the NASCAR Busch Series. Wimmer joined the Keith Coleman Racing team in November 2005, slipping into the #23 Vassarette Chevrolet when the seat was vacated. Wimmer made his NASCAR Busch Series debut at the Phoenix International Raceway and continued with Keith Coleman Racing through April 2006. Wimmer also competed in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2006, driving for Bobby Dotter at the Milwaukee Mile. Chris returned with brother Scott to Wisconsin for the Slinger Nationals in July.
Like many NASCAR Busch drivers, Wimmer continues to search for sponsorship and for his next opportunity.
